So if you’ve been following me on IG for a little bit, you already know that I have been on a hair care journey to restoring my hair the past 2 years! Long story short, just 2 years ago, my hair was SUUUPER long!! I’m talking, almost to my bootay long. It took me forever to get it that way and of course the pregnancy hormones from River were my BFF #thankshormones. I made the decision to get off of birth control 2 years ago since we were done having kiddos and literally MY HAIR FELL OUT. Ugghhh. The ends just kept getting stringy and looked awful. I lost all my thickness, so I kept having to constantly trim AKA cut my hair. =( I was devastated because honestly, long hair was MY THINGS. It was part of my identity and what made me me. Insert fave family pics of my luscious locks below. See, LONG hair that was all mine. ( Pics by Katie Lamb Photography )
Then fast forward a year when I turned 35. Apparently, when you hit that magical age, EVERYTHING just starts to fall apart, atleast according to my sweet neighbor who is a women’s Nurse Practitioner. She told me ” Kris, every woman that hits 35 and comes into my office tells me the exact same thing you’re telling me. Things just kinda fall apart when you hit that age and your hormones go all out of whack .” Well, there’s another UGGGHHH moment. I had to keep on cutting and cut back on highlighting. I would go weeks without washing my hair. ( The hubs was NOT a fan of that =)) I even went and got hair extensions, which I absolutely loved btw, but let’s be honest, they’re just not easy to keep up with financially and also just physically.
So fast forward to where I’m at now…. I have tried so many products and have done ALL THE THINGS imaginable to get my hair back healthy. I think I’m finally at a spot that I can work with and my hormones have leveled out, *hopefully! So I wanted to share what has worked for me and some of my absolute favorite products that I have been loving, in case there is any other woman in their mid thirties that is going through the same thing as me!
OK, So I tried a bunch of shampoos, conditioners, etc. And I spent the $$ for them. I liked some, but I stumbled upon Prose and have forever been changed. So this company creates hair care products specifically for your hair and base off of location. All you do take a quick questionaire and based off of your answers, they formulated products specifically tailored to you!
THIS IS THE COOLEST THING EVER y’all!! You can pick your scent and special add ins and it is mailed directly to your house! You can also set up an auto ship and pick and choose what you liked from the last shipment and/or what you want to change. So far, I have ZERO complaints about these products and absolutely LOVE that they’re tailored just for my hair! I highly recommend giving them a try. You can check them out HERE!
Next up is another brand that is my absolute favorite! I LOVE basically all of the Kristin Ess hair products! Of course, it’s cool that it’s my name AND SPELLED THE RIGHT WAY ;), but honestly they’re REALLY great products if you’re looking for more higher end but still affordable options.
This purple shampoo is HANDS DOWN the best purple shampoo I’ve ever found! I can’t leave it on very long because then my hair turns purple. So you know you got a good one if that’s the case! This Daily Scalp and Hair mask is GREAT too! It is creamy and leaves my hair super smooth! And this Leave in conditioner is amazing! I use this on myself plus all 3 of my girls! Grab these HERE!
Ok if you’re in need of a good dry shampoo, this Living Proof will be your new BFF!! It’s lightweight and doesn’t leave a residue! And if you’re needing some volume this Dry Volume Blast is so good!!
You can grab both of these HERE!
Next up is Coconut Oil!!! Not only does it smell like I just left the beach, but it adds in that extra little shine that I need after my shower! I apply this after I wash my hair when it is damp and then also again after I have either blow dryed it or let it air dry! I don’t do a lot, because it can make your hair greasy, so I try to stick to half way and then down to the ends!
This stuff is super affordable and you can grab this at Target or Walmart! I have also used the Morrocan spray and also the Coconut milk ( which are thicker ) and are also a great alternative! You can grab this HERE!
Now to some heat! I honestly try not to curl my hair that often. Same goes for blow drying. Thankfully God blessed me with straight hair and not a single curl to it, so I can let it air dry. But if I do curl it, this BaByliss Pro is my go to girl! This is a 1 1/4 inch and it is my girl! You can grab this HERE!!
I’m sure that I’ve left out a ton, but if you’re needing a great place to start, then these are amazing affordable options for you to try!! I also recommend getting on a great collagen and biotin routine! And also checking with your doctor in case you do think you need some bloodwork because your hormones have been running you through the mill.
Washing my hair is legit a process, but I’m here for it. I am super happy with how my hair feels now and it’s starting to get back to that thickness and healthiness that I have been missing!
I also recommend finding a great stylist that will listen to your concerns and do what’s best for your hair. Honestly, highlighting and bleaching it just causes so much damage. Same with drying your hair with a blow dryer. So the less chemicals and the less heat the better!
If this journey has taught me anything, it’s that my hair DOES NOT define me. Sure, I’d love to have my long hair back like right now, but accepting that that is not where I am right now is ok. My long hair isn’t who I am, but just a little part of me. Know your worth! Know you are beautiful regardless of your hair or your looks or what kind of clothes you wear or really anything else. All of that is surface and honestly doesn’t really matter in the end. God loves you for you. He doesn’t care that you have messy hair that you haven’t washed in a week or that you have gray hair shining in every which direction, which is totally me too btw 😉 Jesus loves me just for me, just as I am. He knows your worth and it’s not through anything superficial. And I’m just now getting to that place of being ok in the journey that I’m on. I know my hair doesn’t define who I am.
If you’re on a hair care journey getting your locks back to normal, I’d love to hear your thoughts! And if you try any of these, I’d love to know what you liked and what you didn’t like!
*this post is not sponsored by any of the products above. I just genuinely love and use these products on the reg! *
Stay lovely, friends!
